Best Time to Visit Lapland

One of the most common questions we get is, When should I visit Lapland?

The answer depends on the experience you’re looking for. While most travellers think of Lapland as a winter destination, the Aurora season begins as early as late August, when the nights become dark enough again. From autumn’s vibrant colours to the magical snow-covered landscapes of winter, every month offers something unique.

Late August – October | Autumn Colours, First Aurora Nights & transition to Winter

Lapland transforms into a sea of red, orange and gold during Ruska, Finland’s spectacular autumn season. The forests glow with colour, the trails are at their most beautiful, and the first Northern Lights begin to appear on clear nights as darkness returns to the Arctic.

Perfect for:

  • Autumn foliage (Ruska)
  • Hikes, national park visits and nature photography
  • Early Northern Lights viewing since days are still bright but nights are getting longer and darker
  • In Lapland October usually means the season’s first snowfall
  • Quiet travel before the winter crowd
  • Activities, experiences and stays are more reasonable as compared to peak winter

In Helsinki (the capital city of Finland)

  • Stunning colors in the city, the nearby islands and the national parks
  • Warm food and soups in the local food markets add to the mood of the onset of winter
  • Festivals and open air events across the city
December | Christmas Magic

December is Lapland at its most enchanting. Snow-covered forests, festive lights, Santa Claus Village and cosy cabins create the fairytale winter experience that many travellers dream about.

Perfect for:

  • Families with children
  • Visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi
  • Husky and reindeer farms
  • Northern Lights
  • Peak festive atmosphere with premium pricing for stays and activities
  • Booking well in advance recommended
January – April | The silence of the Arctic Winter (best time to visit)

January offers deep snow, crisp Arctic landscapes and some of the darkest nights of the year, ideal conditions for spotting the Northern Lights.

During this time Lapland becomes quieter, more serene and reveals its slow, silent elusive self, almost like the wildlife of the region.

Imagine hot chocolate and marshmallows, warm fires, cozy cabins, snow outside and the warm sauna inside, and the Aurora through the roof of your glass igloos and cabins at night.

March combines thick snow cover with beautiful golden light and noticeably longer days. It’s one of the best months for photographers and anyone who enjoys spending long hours outdoors.

No points for guessing this is my favorite time of the year to visit Lapland! 🙂

Perfect for:

  • Northern Lights chase
  • Husky sledding & Reindeer sleigh riding
  • Snowmobile through Arctic landscapes
  • Winter photography
  • Finnish Sauna & Ice Plunging
  • Snowshoeing in knee deep snow
  • Arctic National Parks
  • Trying your hand at cross country skiing
  • Ice fishing on frozen lakes
  • Staying in a glass igloo or premium wilderness cabin in Inari, Saariselka, Ivalo or nearby regions

Did you know that 2026 -2027 winter is the best time in a decade to witness the Northern Lights?

What Should You Pack?

  • Thermal base layers
  • Insulated winter jacket
  • Waterproof snow pants
  • Warm gloves and mittens
  • Wool socks
  • Winter boots with good grip
  • Head and neck warmer
  • Power bank (cold weather drains batteries faster)

Most activity providers supply thermal overalls and winter boots + a warm soup meal during the activities.

Masala Chai Travel has also partnered with a Finnish outdoor gear company for guests to be able to rent winter overalls especially made for the Arctic winter.

How Many Days Do You Need?

A 5–7 day itinerary gives you enough time to:

  • Experience multiple Arctic activities
  • Keep several nights available for Northern Lights viewing
  • Explore at a relaxed pace without rushing between destinations

But if you are planning the Nordics (Lapland + Northern Norway) we always suggest at least 9 – 11 days.

Is Lapland Expensive?

Lapland is considered a premium winter destination.

Accommodation, flights and popular activities, especially around Christmas and New Year book out months in advance. Planning early gives you the best choice of hotels and often better prices.

If meeting Santa during Christmas is not a priority we suggest planning before or after the Christmas holiday rush. Rovaniemi is Santa’s home so he is there all year round.

Food in Lapland

The Lappish cuisine is simple, flavorful, seasonal, and based on ingredients from the Arctic wilderness – reindeer, fresh fish, wild berries, mushrooms, and herbs. Lapland offers a variety of vegetarian and vegan options and the breakfast buffets at the hotels are also mindful of the same.

For those who look for halal certified meat that might be a challenge in Lapland but can easily be swapped for fresh fish (if acceptable) and vegetarian options.

Rovaniemi city center has an Indian restaurant.

The food scene in Helsinki is diverse and very interesting, hence we always suggest our guests to absolutely spend a few days in the city center.

Do You Need a Visa?

Finland is part of the Schengen Area.

Depending on your nationality, you may need a Schengen tourist visa before travelling.

If you’re travelling from countries like India, you’ll generally need to apply for a visa before departure.

Travellers from many other countries, including several non-EU nations, may be eligible for visa-free entry for short stays.

Always check the latest visa requirements before booking your trip.

We recommend to keep around 2-3 months window from the time of raising the Schengen Visa to travel dates. Though the process is generally smooth and quick, it is always advisable to keep some breathing room.

When you book your holiday with Masala Chai Travel, we offer all the details of your stay and detailed itinerary for you to be able to comfortably apply for your Schengen visa.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into?

The most common international gateway is Helsinki Airport (HEL).

From Helsinki, you can easily connect to Lapland via domestic flights.

You can also travel from Helsinki to Rovaniemi by the overnight train.

The main airports in Finnish Lapland are:

  • Rovaniemi (RVN) – Ideal for Santa Claus Village and first-time visitors
  • Ivalo (IVL) – Great for Saariselkä, Inari and Northern Lapland
  • Kittilä (KTT) – Best for Levi and Ylläs region
  • Kuusamo (KAO) – Convenient for Ruka and nearby winter destinations

Domestic flights from Helsinki usually take 1–1.5 hours.

Masala Chai Travel does NOT book international or domestic flights for our clients. But we will surely help you with planning your flights.
